I write in support of the submission by the National Council of Priests of Australia to the World Synod of Bishops now underway at the Vatican, regarding the vital need to address the critical shortage of priests inter alia.

As long as the Catholic church is willing to accept married clergymen from other Christian churches into its ranks (and that's to be applauded) then it must abandon the absurdity of dumping its own priests who want to get married. It'll not only solve a numbers and needs problem, but also inject some practical Christianity and charity  into the debate. At the moment that aspect is very much down at heel! No wonder Gandhi remarked that he was very taken by Christianity but very much put off by its adherents!   That the "church" may declare a priest as a priest 'forever" on the one hand and then rudely turn its back on him when he marries.....not even allowing him to participate as a lector or communion minister....not only makes a mockery of the ordination but also, of itself, casts an ugly shadow over the sacrament of marriage.

When is this outdated hierarchy of the church going to begin to even reflect some of the attitudes of its Founder? Methinks, too many of those clutching exalted rank have actually lost sight of the fact that they're meant to be light bearers....they've come to believe  they are indeed the light! Perhaps the time has come where those holding such rank are required to surrender it from time to time and take up periodical work at the coalface, especially in those parishes lacking priests.   It it well past the time for the hierarchy to realise and accept...whether it wants to or not...that the clergy + 0 equals zero whilst the clergy + the laity ( "the royal priesthood") equals the church. The very arrogance and pride that brought down Lucifer has dazzled too many  "princes" of the church. The finery must be put aside.

The recognition that Eucharistic communion is meant  for all, divorcees included, is also a reality that must be addressed.   What is it with mere men that they should intervene in the channel of divine love? Why their haste to say "Leave it to us, God. We know you mean well but we'll have to insert some rules and regulations or anyone will get in."   Essentially, simply, why is it that those who've been ordained to communicate the Word simply cannot?
